Global Parnerships That Make the Difference

Since the G8 made improving global health a top priority, advancements have been made in the fight against HIV/AIDS and other diseases, but the real work of solving global health problems lies ahead. Partnerships are an important part of the equation. Join UPMC-Jonas Salk Professor of Global Health and Associate Vice Chancellor of the Center for Global Health, Donald S. Burke, MD, on a quick “tour” around the world to get an idea of the partners we are working with to improve the human condition. For background on Dr. Burke’s travel to some Pitt sites in January 2008 (Italy, India and China), read his global health blog.

Real-Time Tracking of H1N1 Virus

During his presentation, Dr. Burke, a renowned researcher in infectious diseases and viral evolution, will create a computer modeling simulation of the H1N1 virus and then use the model to predict how intervention strategies might affect its spread.

Biosecurity and Other Facets of Global Health

Finally, a panel of experts will discuss how economic, social, legal, environmental and security issues are part of a multidisciplinary framework necessary to solving complex global health problems. The scholars will include a representative from the University’s Center for Biosecurity.
